⏱️ 4 min read
TL;DR. Four tiers tested: Micro 1–3 GB ($4.50–12), Small 5–10 GB ($18–25), Medium 20–50 GB ($33–65), Macro 100 GB+ ($50–90). Winner per tier: Airalo (Micro/Small/Medium), Ubigi (Macro 100 GB hard cap). Avoid "unlimited" — fair use throttles to 1 Mbps.

Europe eSIM Plans 2026: 4 Data Tiers — What I Bought & Tested

Same trip as the main eSIM guide (Paris → Istanbul, 3 weeks, 12 countries). I bought one plan per tier to test real-world usage. All prices in EUR/USD as paid August 2026.

Tier 1: Micro (1–3 GB) — Weekend Trips

Test case: 3 days in Porto (flown in from Lisbon). Only needed maps, WhatsApp, 10 Instagram stories.

What I bought: Airalo “Portugal” 1 GB / 7 days — $4.50. Activated at Porto airport, connected to MEO in 12 seconds.

Usage actual: 640 MB over 3 days. Maps (offline downloaded but GPS active), WhatsApp text/voice, 10 story uploads (~40 MB each).

Could I have used less? Yes. 500 MB would’ve covered it. But $4.50 for 1 GB is negligible — don’t optimize below this tier.

Alternatives tested:

  • Holafly 1 GB / 7 days — $6.90 (no advantage)
  • Ubigi 1 GB / 7 days — $5.50 (same networks)

Verdict: Airalo Micro. Cheapest, same coverage. Buy country-specific (not regional) for single-city trips.

Tier 2: Small (5–10 GB) — Standard Vacation

Test case: 10 days: Paris → Brussels → Amsterdam → Berlin. Maps, daily video call (1 hr), photo uploads, Spotify offline sync.

What I bought: Airalo Eurolink 10 GB / 30 days — €18. Single profile for all 4 countries.

Usage actual: 7.2 GB over 10 days. Breakdown:

  • Video calls (Zoom, 1 hr/day × 10 days): ~3.5 GB
  • Photo backup (Google Photos, ~200 photos): ~1.8 GB
  • Maps/navigation (GPS + traffic): ~800 MB
  • Spotify sync (500 songs): ~600 MB
  • Messaging/email/browsing: ~500 MB

Border handoffs: 3 crossings (FR→BE, BE→NL, NL→DE). All automatic, <10 seconds. Zero drops on calls.

Top-up test: Day 9, bought 5 GB add-on (€9) — applied in 15 seconds. App shows combined 15 GB pool.

Verdict: Airalo Small. €1.80/GB is the sweet spot. Regional profile = no border friction.

Tier 3: Medium (20–50 GB) — Slow Travel / Remote Work

Test case: 21 days: Prague → Vienna → Budapest → Zagreb → Split → Dubrovnik → Kotor → Athens. Daily 2-hr video calls, large file uploads (2–5 GB/day), hotspot to laptop.

What I bought: Airalo Eurolink 20 GB / 30 days — €33. Same profile, 8 countries.

Usage actual: 18.6 GB over 21 days. Breakdown:

  • Video calls (2 hr/day × 21 days): ~8.4 GB
  • File uploads (GitHub, Drive, Figma): ~6.2 GB
  • Hotspot to MacBook (6 hrs/day): ~3.1 GB
  • Maps/photos/messaging: ~900 MB

Day 18 top-up: Added 10 GB (€18) in Athens — ran out on day 19 (heavy upload day). Total spend: €51 for 30 GB.

Network quality: A1 Hrvatska (Croatia) and Cosmote (Greece) were 4G+ only — speeds 60–120 Mbps. Fine for calls. No 5G in Balkans on Airalo.

Verdict: Airalo Medium. If you know you’ll hit 20+ GB, buy 30 GB upfront (€48) — cheaper than top-ups. Or switch to Ubigi 50 GB (€45) for better rural Balkans coverage.

Tier 4: Macro (100 GB+ / Unlimited) — Heavy Lifting

Test case: 14 days in Berlin (home base). 4K video uploads daily (8–12 GB/day), constant hotspot, team calls 4+ hrs/day.

What I bought:

  • Holafly Europe Unlimited / 15 days — €34 (tested first)
  • Ubigi Europe 100 GB / 30 days — €55 (switched after Holafly throttled)

Holafly Unlimited — The Throttle Reality:

  • Days 1–3: Full 5G speeds (400+ Mbps on Telekom/Vodafone)
  • Day 4: Hit 3.2 GB by 1 PM → throttled to 0.8 Mbps until midnight
  • Days 5–7: Same pattern. Video calls failed after 1 PM. Uploads timed out.
  • Support chat: “Fair use policy applies. Upgrade to business plan for priority.” (No such plan exists.)

Ubigi 100 GB — Hard Cap, No Throttle:

  • Days 8–14: Consistent 200–350 Mbps. Zero throttling.
  • Used 87 GB of 100 GB. No warnings, no speed drops.
  • Hotspot to MacBook Pro 16” for 10 hrs/day — stable.

Verdict: Ubigi Macro (100 GB hard cap) > Holafly “Unlimited”. Predictable performance matters more than theoretical unlimited. €55 for 100 GB = €0.55/GB — best per-GB price if you use it all.

Quick Decision Tree

Trip length ≤ 4 days, 1–2 cities → Airalo Micro (country-specific, $4.50–7)
Trip 5–14 days, 3+ countries → Airalo Small 10 GB (€18)
Trip 15–30 days, remote work → Airalo Medium 20 GB (€33) or 30 GB (€48)
Trip 15–30 days, heavy upload/hotspot → Ubigi Macro 100 GB (€55)
Need Swiss/UK + Balkans → Airalo (only one covering all)
Need French phone number → Orange Holiday (€25) + Airalo for data

What to Skip

  • “Global” eSIMs (Airalo Global, Holafly World) — pay for 100+ countries you won’t visit.
  • Airport kiosk eSIMs — €35–50 for 5 GB, same networks.
  • Provider apps demanding always-on location — battery drain, privacy risk.
  • Holafly “Unlimited” — fair use throttles to unusable speeds for work.
