Backup: Local physical SIM for stays >3 weeks. Portugal: Vodafone PT 50 GB/mo (€20). Turkey: Turkcell 20 GB (€12). Greece: Cosmote 30 GB (€15).
Tethering: iPhone 15 Pro → MacBook Pro 16” M3 Max. 8–10 hrs battery on laptop while hotspotting. Anker 737 extends to 14+ hrs.

Banking & Money — The Setup That Never Fails
Wise (primary): USD, EUR, GBP, TRY, RSD, HRK balances. Receive Stripe/Upwork in USD → convert to EUR at mid-market → spend with Wise debit card. Zero foreign transaction fees. Instant EUR SEPA transfers to European landlords.
Revolut Pro (backup): Virtual disposable cards for sketchy subscriptions. 1% cashback on first €1,500/mo spend. Metal plan not worth it — Pro covers everything I need.
Charles Schwab Investor Checking (US fallback): Unlimited ATM rebates worldwide. Use only when Wise/Revolut cards hit limits (rare). No monthly fee.
Tax tracking: QuickBooks Self-Employed + manual spreadsheet for entry/exit dates per country. Schengen 90/180 tracker: =TODAY()-MAXIFS(entry_dates, entry_dates, "<="&TODAY()) — tells me days left in zone.
Insurance — SafetyWing (Yes, It Pays)
Plan: Nomad Insurance + Medical ($56.28/4 weeks, age 30-39). Covers 180 days/year in home country (US).
Claims filed (2):
- Split, Croatia — food poisoning, private clinic, €340. Submitted receipts via app Day 1. Approved Day 4. Paid Day 6 to Wise EUR balance.
- Lisbon, Portugal — chipped molar, emergency dental, €285. Same timeline. No network restriction — chose my own dentist.
What’s not covered: Routine checkups, pre-existing conditions, adventure sports (add-on available). Read the policy — it’s 12 pages, not 50.

- Schengen 90/180: Track in spreadsheet. Days reset on exit. Overstay = €300–1,200 fine + entry ban.
- Portugal D8 Visa: Applied June 2026. Requirements: €820/mo passive income proof, NIF, bank statement, criminal record, health insurance. Processing: 60–90 days. Lawyer: €1,800.
- Turkey e-Visa: $50 online, 90 days/180. Instant approval.
- Digital nomad visas worth it: Portugal D8, Spain (new 2026), Croatia (1 yr, €2,500/mo income). Skip: Estonia (slow), Czechia (complex), Malta (high income req).
What I’d Tell My Day-1 Self
- Buy the Roost V3 on day one. Neck pain cost me 3 weeks of productivity.
- Get Wise + Revolut before leaving home. KYC takes days. Can’t open abroad without proof of address.
- Test your hotspot setup before first trip. MacBook + iPhone + Anker 737 = 14 hr workday anywhere.
