Paris Plages 2026 turns the capital into a city beach from 4 July to 30 August, and it is entirely free. For the 25th edition, six spots open for supervised swimming — the Bassin de la Villette, the canal Saint-Martin at the Récollets basin, the Rives de Seine park, and three new Seine bathing sites at Bras Marie, Bras de Grenelle and Quai de Bercy. This guide gives you the dates, the six spots in detail, the calmest hours to visit, and how to combine each swim with a silent walk through our Paris guides.
What Is Paris Plages 2026?
Every summer since 2002, Paris Plages has turned the city into a seaside resort without the sea. For its 25th edition, the event runs from 4 July to 30 August 2026 and everything is free: swimming, watersports, reading decks, board games, exhibitions and family animations.
The 2026 edition has a theme: the United States, in honour of the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Across the sites you will find a programme built around US culture — music, sport and activities for families — all free and open to everyone.
For walkers, the interesting part is where it happens: all six spots sit on the water, on the banks that our quiet Paris guides already cover. You can swim, then walk. This guide connects the two.
The 6 Free Swimming Spots
1. Bassin de la Villette (19th arrondissement)
The biggest of the swimming spots, on the vast water square of the Bassin de la Villette. Expect a dedicated swimming area, a shallow paddling basin for children, a nautical base and free activities all summer. The Bassin de la Villette walk shows the calmest corners of the quays between swims. Metro: line 5 (Laumière) or line 7 (Riquet).
2. Canal Saint-Martin — Récollets basin (10th arrondissement)
The covered waterway opens its own supervised swimming zone at the bassin des Récollets, near the Gare de l’Est. It is the most atmospheric of the sites — swimming under the plane trees of the canal that our Canal Saint-Martin guide walks along. The zone opens during the summer heat waves, so check the day’s schedule before you go. Metro: line 4 or 7 (Gare de l’Est), line 5 (République).
3. Parc des Rives de Seine
On the pedestrian banks of the Seine, this site combines loungers, reading decks and free family animations with access to the water. It is the most “beach-like” of the classic spots and sits right on the quiet quays described in our 48-hour itinerary. Metro: line 1 or 7 (Pont Neuf).
4. Bras Marie (4th arrondissement)
One of the three official Seine bathing sites, at the foot of the Pont Louis-Philippe, facing the historic heart of the city. The water is supervised and tested, and the setting is the most central of the six — swimming with Notre-Dame and the Île Saint-Louis in view. Metro: line 7 (Pont Marie) or line 1 (Saint-Paul).
5. Bras de Grenelle (15th arrondissement)
A second Seine bathing site, on the quieter western stretch of the river near the Beaugrenelle district. Less crowded than the central sites, it pairs well with the Parc des Rives de Seine walks and the calm afternoon light of the south-west quays. Metro: line 6 (Bir-Hakeim) or line 10 (Charles Michels).
6. Quai de Bercy (12th arrondissement)
The third Seine site, on the eastern bank at Bercy, within easy walking distance of the Parc de Bercy and its three quiet gardens. It is the calmest of the Seine spots and perfect for combining a swim with the shaded alleys of our Bercy park guide. Metro: line 14 (Bercy) or line 6 (Quai de la Gare).
The Quiet Hours
The same logic that makes our quiet itinerary work applies to the beaches:
- Weekday mornings before 10:00 — the spots are nearly empty and the water is at its freshest.
- After 18:00 — the families leave, the light softens and the quays belong to the walkers again.
- Avoid weekends and 14:00-17:00 — that is when the Bassin de la Villette and the Rives de Seine are busiest.
In August 2026, the fifth heatwave of the summer is peaking. The golden rule: swim early or swim at dusk, and keep the middle of the day for the shaded walks in our coolcation and green Paris guide.
Combine a Swim with a Silent Walk
Each spot opens onto a walk that our guides already cover in detail:
- Villette → the Bassin de la Villette walk, then climb to the Buttes-Chaumont cliffs for the best free view of the city.
- Canal Saint-Martin → follow the canal walk north after your swim, through the covered waterway and the iron footbridges.
- Bercy → the Parc de Bercy gardens, three themed gardens and long shaded paths, a two-minute walk from the water.
- Bras Marie → the quays to the Île Saint-Louis, the calmest of the central islands.
- Rives de Seine → the pedestrian banks east and west of the Pont Neuf, crowd-free at dawn and after 21:00.
All of it is free, and all of it fits the Paris Plages 2026 calendar until 30 August.
