1. Perast, Montenegro — Best Beauty-per-Euro in Europe
Visited: July 18–22, 2026 (4 nights)
Transit: Bus Dubrovnik → Perast (2h, €12, 3×/day). Or fly Tivat (TIV) → taxi 20m (€25).
Stay: Stone House Perast — 300-year-old stone house, bay balcony. €45/night. Airbnb (host: Nikola). Wi-Fi: 100 Mbps.
Daily cost: €65 (lodging €45 + meals €15 + boat €5).
What I did:
- Our Lady of the Rocks — private boat €10 (07:00 = alone). Shared taxi boat €3 (wait for group).
- Risan Roman Mosaics (€3, 20m) — 2nd-century villa floors, zero crowds.

2. Sighișoara, Romania — Medieval Citadel + Fiber

Transit: Train Geneva → Visp (1h 45m, €45) → PostBus Visp → Saas-Fee (25m, €8, every 30m). Total: 2h 30m, no car. Swiss Travel Pass covers all.
Stay: Hotel Spielboden — 3-star, ski-in/out, breakfast. €220/night. Direct (spielboden.ch). Wi-Fi: 500+ Mbps. Car-free village.

- Metro Alpin — highest underground funicular to 3,500m (€65 RT). Glacier, 0°C.

5. Theth, Albania — True Isolation, No Signal
Visited: August 28 – September 1, 2026 (4 nights)
Transit: Bus Shkodër → Theth (3h, €10, 07:00 & 13:00 only, unpaved last 1.5h). Motion sickness meds essential. Or 4×4 hire (€80 one-way).
Stay: Guesthouse Marash — family compound, meals included. €30/night full board. Cash only. WhatsApp (+355 6X XXX XXX). Wi-Fi: None. Starlink shared, 5 Mbps evenings.

6. Mokra Gora, Serbia — Vintage Train, Wooden Village

7. Lake Bled, Slovenia — Stunning But July = Crowded
Visited: July 14–17 (3 nights) and September 22–24 (2 nights, for comparison)
Transit: Train Ljubljana → Bled Jezero (1h 15m, €10, hourly). Walk 10m to lake.
Stay (Jul): Hotel Park — lake view, €180/night. Wi-Fi: 200 Mbps. Stay (Sep): Bled Rose — guesthouse, €95/night. Wi-Fi: 150 Mbps.

Reality (Jul 06:00): Row to island (€15), 3 other boats. Reality (Sep 10:00): 20 boats queued. Parking €15/day full.
Skip: July entirely — 10,000 day-trippers. Go 06:00 or September. Skip: Bled Castle (€14) — same view from Ojstrica hike (free, 45m up). Skip: Cream cake at Park Hotel (€8) — local bakery €3.50, same recipe.
8. Las Médulas, Spain — Roman Mines, Red Cliffs, Chestnut Forest
Visited: October 18–21, 2026 (3 nights)
Transit: Train Madrid → Ponferrada (3h 30m, €25) → Bus Ponferrada → Las Médulas (45m, €3, 4×/day).
Stay: Casa do Forno — restored stone house, chestnut forest. €60/night. Direct (casadoforno.com). Wi-Fi: 50 Mbps. Usable for email/Slack, not video calls.
Daily cost: €80 (lodging €60 + meals €15 + bus €5).
What I did:
- Orellán Viewpoint — 07:00, red cliffs glow, zero people.

9. Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites (Italy) — Hiking Mecca
Visited: September 15–18, 2026 (3 nights)
Transit: Train Venice → Cortina d’Ampezzo (3h, €25) → Bus Cortina → Misurina (45m, €5) → Bus Misurina → Rifugio Auronzo (15m, €3). Total: 4h 30m. Or drive Venice → Rifugio Auronzo (2h 45m).
Stay: Rifugio Locatelli — mountain hut, dormitory €45/night half-board. Private room €140/night. Booked 4 months ahead (CAI). Wi-Fi: 100 Mbps (satellite, surprisingly good).

- Tre Cime loop — 3h 30m, 10 km, 400m elevation. Start 06:30 = 20 people. 10:00 = 500+.
- Cadini di Misurina — 2h from Locatelli, limestone spires, zero crowds (steeper).
- Lago di Misurina — 06:00 reflection shots, 2 photographers.
Skip: Cable car to Rifugio Auronzo (€30 RT) — walk 45m from Misurina, save €30, better acclimatization. Skip: August — Italian holiday month, huts full, trails jammed. September = perfect.

- Print everything. Reservations, bus timetables, maps, emergency contacts. Signal dies in valleys.
- Cash is king. 60% of rural AL/ME/RS guesthouses = cash only. Bring €200–300 small bills.
- First bus / last bus. Rural schedules: 1–3 buses/day. Miss 07:00 = stuck 24h. Ask host for physical timetable.
- Book direct. WhatsApp/email guesthouse. Saves 15–20% vs Booking/Airbnb, money stays local.
- Learn 10 phrases. “Hello, thank you, water, bill, help” in local language = doors open.
