1. Elba, Italy — Not Just Napoleon’s Exile
Getting there: Ferry from Piombino (1 hr, €18-25 foot passenger). Toremar and Moby run hourly in summer. Book ahead for car.
Where to stay: Poggio (hill village, 15 min from Portoferraio). Quiet, views, cooler nights. Avoid Marina di Campo — package tour central.

Where to stay: Furnas (São Miguel) — hot springs, quiet. Lajes das Flores — harbor view, walking distance to trails.
Eat: Cozido das Furnas (meat stew cooked underground by volcanic heat). Lapas (limpets) grilled with garlic. Queijo São Jorge (spicy cow cheese).
Walk: Lagoa do Fogo trail (São Miguel, 3h round trip). Fajã Grande to Fajãzinha (Flores, 4h, waterfalls entire way). Pico mountain summit (6h, guide required).
Skip: Furnas tourist complex (crowds, overpriced). Whale watching boats with 50 people (small zodiac = better).

What Actually Matters
Book ferries early for Elba, Gozo, Azores inter-island. Summer sells out.
Rent a car on Kauai, São Tomé, Azores (São Miguel, Pico, Flores). Not optional.
Wake up at 6 AM on every island. That’s when beaches are empty, bakeries open, light is magic.
Learn 10 words of the local language. “Good morning,” “thank you,” “coffee,” “water,” “where is…” — changes every interaction.
