A 48-team World Cup, explained

For the first time, the World Cup expands to 48 teams. They're divided into 12 groups of 4. The top two from each group plus the eight best third-placed teams advance — making a brand-new round of 32 before the familiar round of 16. A finalist will play eight matches; group winners get a small rest advantage.

                          Frequently asked questions

                          Why 48 teams in 2026?

FIFA expanded the field from 32 to 48 nations to broaden global participation. The new format adds a round of 32 to the knockout stage.

How are the 48 slots distributed?

                          UEFA 16 · CAF 9 · AFC 8 · CONMEBOL 6 · CONCACAF 6 (incl. 3 hosts) · OFC 1 · plus 2 from inter-confederation play-offs.

                          When is the official draw?

December 2025. Until then, group placements are unknown — but the qualified teams progressively confirm through 2025.

Which non-traditional team should I watch?

Morocco (semi-finalist in 2022), New Zealand (rebuilding under a new generation) and Uzbekistan (first-ever qualification in sight) all promise compelling stories.
