The Ultimate Packing Checklist for International Trips

A great trip starts with packing 30% less than you think. This list is built for a 7–21 day international trip in a single 40L carry-on.

Documents (in a single zip pouch)

  • Passport with 6+ months validity
  • Printed copy of itinerary and first hotel
  • Driver’s license + international permit if renting
  • Two physical credit/debit cards from different networks (Visa + Mastercard)
  • $100–200 in local currency obtained on arrival from a bank ATM

Clothing — the 4 / 3 / 2 rule

  • 4 tops (mix: 2 short-sleeve, 1 long-sleeve, 1 nicer for dinners)
  • 3 bottoms (1 jeans/long, 1 chinos, 1 shorts or skirt)
  • 2 pairs of shoes (walking + something dressier or sandals)
  • 1 light packable rain jacket
  • 7 pairs of socks and underwear (laundry mid-trip)

Tech kit

  • Phone + charger + 10,000 mAh power bank
  • Universal travel adapter (Type A/C/G/I covers 99% of countries)
  • eSIM activated before departure
  • Headphones (noise-cancelling = best long-haul investment)

Toiletries — 100ml rule

  • Solid shampoo and conditioner bar (no liquid limit, lasts a month)
  • Toothbrush + travel toothpaste
  • Sunscreen SPF 50
  • Small first-aid: paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters, diarrhea tablets

The “thank me later” extras

  • Microfiber towel
  • Reusable water bottle (empty through security)
  • Earplugs and eye mask
  • A copy of your passport, hidden in a different bag

What to leave at home

Books (Kindle), hair dryer (every hotel has one), more than 2 pairs of jeans, “just in case” outfits.

Do I need a separate travel insurance card?
A photo on your phone + screenshot of policy number is enough at borders and hospitals.
