Key takeaways

  • EES is fully live since April 10, 2026: face + fingerprints replace stamps for non-EU short stays.
  • Flexibility to pause biometrics ended Sept 6 — expect 60-120 min peaks at AMS, MUC, Lisbon.
  • Travel to Europe app (72h, Sweden + Portugal wider) saves minutes, not queues — fingerprints still at border.
  • ETIAS is NOT yet required in Sept 2026: Q4 2026 target, ~€20, beware fake sites.
  • Take 3h+ layovers and pre-registration kiosks/tablets where offered.
TL;DR. EES = at the border now (photo + fingerprints). ETIAS = not yet (Q4 2026). Use the Travel to Europe app within 72h if entering Sweden/Portugal, take 3h connections, arrive early. Flexibility ended Sept 6.

Lisbon, 8:12am last week: the non-EU lane barely moved, the EU lane flowed. A family with a 45-minute connection started doing maths out loud. They missed it. Since Sept 6, border officers can no longer just switch biometrics off when halls fill — that safety valve is gone, and autumn city-breaks + Bavarian Alps + Heritage weekends fill those halls.

From the field — Elena Marsh: I pre-registered in the app and still queued 40 minutes. The app saved me maybe 90 seconds at the booth. Worth it, but it is not a fast-track.

What changed Sept 6-16

  • Emergency flexibility expired Sept 6. Airlines (IATA) asked extension to winter; Commission says summer broadly worked, with adjustments at some crossing points.
  • Busiest hubs unofficially eased pressure (Greece notably), France/Eurostar/Dover still manual enrolment, car drivers not yet enrolled at Dover, Eurotunnel awaiting French clearance. Do not assume one airport = all.
  • 45M+ crossings logged by late March 2026, 24k refusals — system is real, not pilot.

Permanent vs Sept 2026: EES itself is permanent. Queue levels, app country coverage and ETIAS date are moving — recheck before each trip.

Step by step: zero-stress crossing

  1. 72h before: if entering Sweden (full: passport+selfie+questionnaire) or Portugal (questionnaire, Lisbon airport live) — download Travel to Europe (iOS 16.7.11+/Android 10+NFC+selfie camera). Select entry country + crossing point + time, scan data page + chip, selfie, questions, add co-travellers, submit. Keep QR if generated.
  2. At airport: follow Pre-registration signs. Kiosk (alone) or tablet (agent) → questionnaire → directed to booth. Officers help at kiosks; use is free, optional.
  3. At booth: passport, face image, fingerprints (under-12 exempt fingerprints), entry/exit place-time logged. Refusal if biometrics refused.
  4. Exit: same lanes, stamped digitally. Watch 90/180 compliance — overstayers flagged automatically.

App privacy: only you see drafts; border authority sees after submit; drafts auto-delete 7 days. Data under EU law. Does not guarantee entry.

Traveller using pre-registration kiosk before booth Kiosks do the typing, guards do the decision. Use the kiosk.

Real times + layover rule

  • Amsterdam peaks 80→120 min, Munich avg 31→60 min summer 2026, 3h worst cases. Even with pauses. Now without.
  • Himmelmann/IATA advice we endorse: no tight connections. Take 3h+ intra-Schengen layovers Sept-Oct, 4h if changing terminal + EES + security.
  • Morning long-haul banks (8-11am) worst. Evening US arrivals smoother.

ETIAS: wait, don’t pay

No IT go-live yet, June 17 board discussed entry, September board to revisit timeline. Fee ~€20. When live: official site/app only, minutes approval mostly, email decision. Until then, any ETIAS-pay-now ad = scam. Carriers from April 10 must pre-check single/double visa holders via eu-LISA Carrier Interface — another reason to have documents ready.

10-point checklist (print this)

  • Biometric passport valid 3+ months post-exit?
  • 90/180 counted?
  • App journey submitted <72h if Sweden/Portugal?
  • Screenshots offline (QR, bookings, return)?
  • 3h layover minimum?
  • First-night address ready for questionnaire?
  • Kids docs + under-12 rule known?
  • No ETIAS payment made?
  • Insurance covering missed connection?
  • Plan B train/flight if miss?

Going to Paris Heritage Days or Bavarian Alps? Do the app the night before, not at the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything before travelling with EES?
No mandatory pre-step. Optionally pre-register within 72h in the Travel to Europe app (biometric passport + NFC + selfie) where your entry country supports it, or use kiosks/tablets at the airport. Final check is always by a guard.
Is ETIAS mandatory in September 2026?
No. ETIAS is scheduled for Q4 2026, fee ~€20, 3-year validity. Do not pay any site claiming it is required now — use only the official EU domain when live.
How long are EES queues in Sept 2026?
Summer peaks hit 120 min Amsterdam, 60 min Munich, up to 3h at worst hubs, even with pauses allowed. Since Sept 6 pauses ended, airlines advise 3h+ connections and early arrival.
Who is exempt from EES?
EU/Schengen nationals, long-stay visa and residence holders. Everyone else on short stay (including visa-free US/UK) is enrolled: photo + fingerprints (under-12 photo only).
Does the app let me skip the queue?
No. It shortens the booth interview. You still queue with non-EU lanes and give fingerprints at the border. Drafts delete after 7 days if unsubmitted.
