Heritage Days Paris 2026 (Sept 19-20): 12 Quiet Places + Booking Guide
Sept 19-20, 2026: photography + endangered heritage themes. Where to book, where to go without reservation, 3 silent walking routes + times. Field-tested guide.
Key takeaways
- JEP 2026 runs Sept 19-20, 43rd edition, themes: heritage of photography + endangered heritage.
- Booked venues (Bourvallais, ministries, Elysee) vs no-booking venues (Hotel de Ville, Marine museum, churches) — choose by queue tolerance.
- Go at 9-10am or after 16:30, walk the 7th and Marais routes to link 3-4 sites without metro.
- Bring ID, no large bags, check reservation opening dates — most free slots opened early September.
I was at Hotel de Ville last year at 9:40am: ten people in front of me, coffee still warm. At 11:30 the same line bent around Rue de Lobau. That is the whole game for the Journees europeennes du patrimoine 2026 — same places, completely different day depending on the hour and whether you booked.
From the field — Elena Marsh: I walk the 7th every September with a camera and no plan B used to cost me an hour. Below is the plan I now use: reservation sites first, then everything linked on foot.
What changes in 2026
43rd edition, Sept 19-20, 2026. Two national themes, and Paris takes both literally:
- Heritage of photography: bicentenary displays, vintage prints at Hotel de Ville, Charles Marville walks, photo conservation workshops at Musee de La Poste (Le Petit Recoleur family workshop).
- Endangered heritage: restore, resist, reimagine: restoration demos, artisans at Hotel de Croisilles (12 Rue du Parc Royal, 3rd — woodcarving, metalwork, mosaic, first opening), archaeological stores in the 18th (800m² of finds, guided explanation of post-excavation work).
Versailles joins with a special angle: 250th anniversary of American Independence, exceptional opening of Rue de l’Independance Americaine sites (Grand Commun, Congress Chamber, King’s Kitchen Garden link).
Permanent vs 2026: the third weekend of September is permanent. Themes, reservation opening dates and the Versailles American-Independence focus are 2026-only. Verified Sept 16 on official JEP programme and Paris city picks.

Book vs no-booking [read this table first]
| Type | Examples Sept 2026 | Booking | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed palaces | Elysee, National Assembly, Senate, ministries (Justice Hotel de Bourvallais 9am-6pm), Invalides governor salons | Mandatory, free slots opened early Sept, ID required | If full, stop refreshing — switch to plan B below |
| Museums backstage | Musee des Arts et Metiers backstage, Grand Palais Fine Arts Paris edition, restoration workshops | Mostly mandatory, opens ~Sept 9 | Take the earliest slot, workshops fill first |
| Open city places | Hotel de Ville Sat 10am-6:15pm / Sun 12pm-6:15pm, Musee national de la Marine free weekend, Saint-Denis basilica necropolis free, College de France 10am-6pm Latin Quarter | Free, no booking (flow-controlled) | Best queue-to-value ratio |
| Churches + outdoor | Saint-Denis 2pm guided 1h15, Cite du Cinema Saint-Denis 11am-6pm, night walk Rosa Parks 19th Sat 8-10pm (20+ booking) | Walk-in except night walk | Use as buffers between booked slots |
No large luggage at Bourvallais and Banque de France sites, no cloakroom. Reduced mobility: former strong-rooms and some offices are not accessible — check the venue sheet before going.
Hotel de Ville opens its reception rooms, library and Council Chamber. Go at opening, meet the restorers — that is the real show.
3 silent routes that actually link
All on foot, cafes and juice bars only, no detours.
1. 7th morning — Grenelle to Invalides (2.2 km, 9:00-11:30)
Metro Solferino L12, Hotel de Rochechouart area (Education ministry class reconstitution, Boulle school demos) → Rue de Grenelle → Invalides governor salons if booked, otherwise Army Museum courtyards. Quietest before 10am. Combine with our quiet Paris walks for the return via Champ de Mars.
2. Marais midday — Croisilles to Hotel de Ville (1.4 km, 12:00-14:00)
Hotel de Croisilles artisans (go at noon, demos restart) → Place des Vosges garden pause → Hotel de Ville. Sunday 12-2pm is the hollow hour — families lunch, line drops.
3. North-evening — 18th stores to Rosa Parks (2 km, 16:30-20:00)
Archaeological stores 11 Rue du Pre (guided, fascinating if you like Indiana Jones without the flight) → Buttes-Chaumont pause → Rosa Parks night walk 8pm if you secured the 20+ slot. Otherwise, canal walk. See also Paris off-season guide for September light times.
If you only have half a day: Hotel de Ville + Marine museum + Seine walk. Both free, both flow well, both fit the 2026 photo theme.
