History of the Louvre and Tuileries

The Louvre began as a medieval fortress built by King Philip Augustus in 1190. It was transformed into a royal palace under Francis I and eventually became a museum in 1793. The iconic glass pyramid entrance opened in 1989. The Tuileries Garden, designed by André Le Nôtre in 1664, was the royal garden and is now a beloved public park. Together they form the most prestigious cultural axis in Paris.

Art and highlights

Inside the Louvre, don’t miss the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. The Tuileries features sculptures by Maillol, Rodin, and Giacometti. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Luxor Obelisk continue the historical perspective towards the Arc de Triomphe. Our silent walk captures this monumental route in early morning light.
