1. Visby, Gotland (Sweden) — Best Value + Fiber

Visited: July 8–12, 2026 (4 nights)

Ferry: Destination Gotland, Nynäshamn → Visby. 3h 15m. €45 one-way (foot passenger, booked 60 days ahead). Departs 07:30, 11:00, 15:00, 19:30. On time: 4/4 crossings. Car: €120+ (book 3 months ahead).

Where I stayed: Hotell Strandporten — harbor view, room 302. €85/night including breakfast buffet. Booked direct (strandporten.se). Fiber: 300 Mbps. Worked 4h video calls daily.

Daily cost: €115 (lodging €85 + meals €20 + local bus €10).

What I did:

• Visby City Wall — 3.4 km loop, 06:00 = alone. Medieval towers, Baltic views.
• Gotlands Museum — €12, 2 hr. Viking silver hoards, picture stones.
• Cycle to Fårö — rent bike (€25/day), ferry Visby→Fårö (25 min, €5). Ingmar Bergman house, raukar (sea stacks). 40 km round trip.

Visited: June 18–21, 2026 (3 nights)

Ferry: Hellenic Seaways Flying Cat, Piraeus → Hydra. 1h 50m. €38 one-way (booked 30 days ahead). Departs 08:30, 12:30, 16:30, 19:30. Hydrofoil = no cars. Luggage: porter at port (€3/bag, cash).

Where I stayed: Hydra Vision — stone house, port view, 50 steps up. €120/night. Booked direct (hydravision.gr). Wi-Fi: 100 Mbps (fiber to port, distributed via mesh). Good for calls.

• Ano Syros — medieval upper town. 400 steps or bus (€2). Catholic cathedral, narrow alleys, zero tourists 08:00.
• Beach: Galissas — bus 20 min (€2). Sandy, shallow, taverna on sand. Sept = locals only.
• Day trip to Tinos — ferry 30 min (€10). Dovecotes, marble villages, Panagia church.

Skip:

• Organized “island tours” (€50) — bus drives you to 3 beaches. Local bus = €2, same beaches, your pace.
• Expecting nightlife — Ermoupoli: 3 bars, close 01:00. It’s a working capital, not Mykonos.

4. Kastellorizo (Greece) — The Edge of Europe

Visited: August 25–28, 2026 (3 nights)

Access: No direct Athens ferry in 2026.

• Option A: Fly Rhodes (RHO) → Kastellorizo (KZS). Olympic Air, 20 min, 4×/week (Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun). €65 one-way. Book 60 days ahead — 18 seats, sells out.
• Option B: Ferry Kaş (Turkey) → KZS. 4h, €40. Requires Turkish e-visa ($50) + Greek entry stamp. Border formalities 1h.

• Day trips from Rhodes — 8h round trip for 2h on island. Stay overnight or skip.
• Credit cards — 50% cash only. Bring €300 cash.

5. Lastovo (Croatia) — Wild, Forested, Hard Ferry

Visited: July 22–25, 2026 (3 nights)

Ferry: Jadrolinija, Split → Lastovo (Ubli port). Scheduled: 4h 30m. Actual: 5h 15m–6h. €25 one-way (foot). Car: €80. Wind delays = standard. Night ferry (23:00 dep, 05:00 arr) = calmer, but no transport at Ubli at 05:00.

Where I stayed: Villa Lastovo — stone house, village center. €70/night. Booked via Airbnb (host: Marko). Wi-Fi: 4G only (A1), spotty. 10 Mbps morning, 2 Mbps evening. Not for work.

Ferry: TLG, Hyères (Tour Fondue) → Porquerolles. 20 min. €18 RT (foot). Every 30 min 07:00–20:00. Car: not allowed (park at Tour Fondue, €15/day). Book online (tlg-iles.com) — skip queue.

• Cycle the island — 30 km flat loop, dedicated paths. 3 hr full circle. Vineyards, forts, beaches.
• Plage Notre-Dame — voted “Europe’s most beautiful beach” 2015. White sand, turquoise. 09:00 = 10 people. May = perfect.
• Fort Sainte Agathe — 17th century, panoramic views. €4, 45 min.
• Wine tasting — Domaine de l’Île (organic, €15 tasting). Bike there.

Skip:

• Port-area restaurants — overpriced, frozen. Cycle 2 km to Le Mas or La Courtade = better food, same price.
• August — 5,000 day-trippers/day. May/June/Sept = civilized.
• Walking whole island — 30 km sand/rock. Rent bike (included at most hotels).

Universal Island Rules (Learned the Hard Way)

1. Book ferry 30–60 days ahead for summer. Hydrofoils sell out. Car decks sell out 3 months ahead.
2. Night ferry = calmer seas but plan for 05:00 arrival (no taxis/buses). Book port-adjacent stay.
3. Cash is king on small Greek/Croatian islands. 30–50% cash-only. Bring small bills.
4. Wi-Fi ≠ fiber. Ask host: “Speed test screenshot?” before booking if you need calls.
5. Stay overnight. Day-trippers leave 17:00–19:00. Magic hour = 19:00–22:00.
6. Water taxi numbers — save 2–3 local captains’ WhatsApp on arrival. Apps don’t work.
