I live 200 meters from Rue Oberkampf. This isn’t a “12 things to do” list copied from TripAdvisor. It’s the streets I walk at 6:30 AM when the bakeries open and the night crowd has gone home.
Oberkampf runs north-south through the 11e, from République to Ménilmontant. It was working-class, then artist squats, now mixed — families, musicians, tech workers, the last old-timers. The magic is in the side streets: Passage Lhomme, Rue Saint-Maur, Rue de la Folie-Méricourt.
Metro: Oberkampf (Lines 5, 9), Parmentier (Line 3), Saint-Maur (Line 3), Ménilmontant (Line 2). Bus: 46, 56, 69, 71, 96.

Route 1: The Spine — Rue Oberkampf North to South (2.2 km, 35 min walk)
Start: République (Metro 3,5,8,9,11). Walk: Rue du Faubourg du Temple → becomes Rue Oberkampf at Place de la République.

- Marché Popincourt (Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, Tue/Fri/Sun 7 AM-2:30 PM) — best market in 11e. Cheese, fish, produce, clothes. Go at 7 AM.
End: Metro Saint-Maur (Line 3).
Route 3: Canal & Green — North Edge (1.8 km, 30 min)
Start: Metro Goncourt (Line 11). Walk: Rue de la Grange aux Belles → Canal Saint-Martin locks → Quai de Jemmapes.
Stops:
- Holybelly 5 (5 Rue Lucien Sampaix) — best brunch in Paris (eggs, sourdough, coffee, €14). Queue at 9 AM. Go at 7:30 AM for coffee only, no queue.

- Canal locks operating — watch boats rise/fall. Meditative.

Avoid: Republique (noisy, generic), Bastille (tourist traps), Nation (transit hub, no soul).
What to Skip (Tourist Traps Nearby)
- Place des Vosges — 4th arrondissement, not Oberkampf. Pretty but crowded.
- Jardin des Tuileries — 1st/8th arrondissement. Not here.
- Café des Deux Moulins — 18th arrondissement (Amélie). Overpriced, average coffee.
- Père Lachaise main entrance — go to Gambetta entrance (back), walk down. Quieter.
- Rue de Lappe after midnight — drunk crowds, noise, not “authentic.”
